Tautime Configuration

From Tauwiki

Jump to: navigation, search

tauTime is an instant messenger service exclusively for the TAUVEX team :) We have Openfire as our server. It is based on XMPP, an open protocol for instant messaging and group chat. All team members are expected to be logged onto tauTime atleast during office hours. This document is a guide to configure some of the well known XMPP clients to use tauTime.

Note: This document is a derivative of generic instructions that lets your chat client connect to any XMPP protocol based instant messenger service (for eg. googleTalk).

[edit] Preamble

You need to get a user account on tauTime. Please contact Reks if you don't have an account.

[edit] SamePlace: firefox Plugin

Firefox users can use a plugin called samePlace to get tauTime integrated into the browser itself.

  • Step 1: After the plugin installation and firefox restart, A popup window will prompt to add a new account. You may also get to this point from
  FireFox-menu: tools -> addons -> samePlace -> Preferences -> Add account
  • Step 2: Choose "Jabber" from the list of protocols. domain: tauvex.iiap.res.in. Also type in your username, password. Modify the "Advanced" settings if you need to change encryption method etc. Default values should work without any issues.
  • Step 3: Apply changes and you should see this window if everything went well.

[edit] Spark: java based client

Spark is an open source, cross-platform, instant messaging client which makes use of XMPP protocol. This is supposed to be the most suitable client for Openfire servers, since both are from the same development team. It is a two step process to install and configure Spark for tauTime.

  • Step 2: Run Spark and enter the account information. Username: <username>, Password: your password and server: tauvex.iiap.res.in. Optional: Choose Host: tauvex.iiap.res.in in the Advanced settings window.

[edit] Kopete

Kopete is a multi-protocol, free software instant messaging client that comes with the KDE desktop environment. You need to have KDE installed on your machine. Note that redhat/fedora do not do this by default.

  • Step 1: Add a new Account. Menu: Settings->Configure
  • Step 2: Select "Jabber" as Messaging Service in the Account Settings Window
  • Step3: Basic setup Tab. JabberID: username@tauvex.iiap.res.in and Password: <your_passwd>
  • Step 4 (Optional): Connection Tab. Select "overrride default server information" and Server: tauvex.iiap.res.in
  • Step 5: Apply changes. Now you can connect from the messenger window.

[edit] Pidgin

Pidgin (formerly named Gaim) is a multi-platform instant messaging client. It is usually associated with gnome Desktop.

  • Step 1: Add a new Account. Menu: Accounts->Add/Edit
  • Step 2: Select "XMPP" as the protocol for the new Account
  • Step 3: Basic setup Tab. Screen name: <username> and Password: <your_passwd>. Domain: tauvex.iiap.res.in
  • Step 4: Advanced setup tab: Connect server: tauvex.iiap.res.in
  • Step 5: Apply changes. Now you can connect from the messenger window.

[edit] Other Clients

Always give your user name as <username>@tauvex.iiap.res.in. If there is a separate field to enter "Domain" or "Server", give "tauvex.iiap.res.in" and username as <username>.

[edit] Autostart

Once you are done with configuration and a test run, it is highly recommended that you add Spark/kopete/pidgin/gaim/.. to start automatically with the desktop environment. Configure the chat client to save password and connect automatically.
