TAUVEX Projects
Sponsored Projects
DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS TO STELLAR SPECTRA AND
TAUVEX DATA at Inter University
Center for Astronomy & Astrophysics (IUCAA).
Project sponsored by ISRO-RESPOND.
Principal Investigator (PI): Ranjan Gupta (IUCAA).
Junior Research Fellow: Archana Bora (IUCAA/ISRO).
Science Objectives:
In the recent decade, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN's) have entered the field of
astronomical applications due to the increasing demand on the large data bases which
are upcoming as a result of new satellite based large surveys. The PI and his group
have used ANN's in classification of astronomical spectra in various bands over
past decade and would discuss these results as examples of application of this powerful
tool. Recently, the group has evolved a scheme using the Principal Component Analysis
(PCA) technique to fill up the gaps in stellar spectral libraries which has greatly
improved the ANN based classification accuracies. The experience gained by the group
will help in the application of ANN to the basic TAUVEX data, i.e. star/galaxy
classification of raw images and TAUVEX spectral data.
